When Trump started tweeting about his “friend” ASAP Rocky, a rapper who he knew nothing about, along with most of the world, everyone knew instantly that the president was pandering for the black vote. Unfortunately for Trump, he picked a rapper that most people either flat out hated or hadn’t even heard of.
Trump worked not-so-hard to get Rocky released from a Swedish prison where he was being held after an altercation that led to serious injury, but his plan seemingly worked when the musician was released soon after.
Trump’s camp expected a thank you from the rapper, a message they had planned to quote and meme to death to get the attention of even more black people, but when Rocky was released, he cut all ties to Trump after encounters with trump allies.
Those allies, Darrell Scott and Kareem Lanier, worked with the president to secure Rocky’s release. The two just sat for an interview with Yahoo News in which they complained about being ghosted by the rapper upon his release.
Scott remembers asking for nothing but a ‘thank you’ during a talk with Rocky’s manager John Ehmann, Scott recalls:
“There were no conditions attached, but my condition and Kareem’s condition was that all I’m asking for you guys to do is say thank you.”
According to Scott, Ehmann responded by saying:
“If a serial killer gets Rocky out of jail, I would have no problem saying thank you to the serial killer.”
That’s not at all what happened, however, when Trump intervened, because shortly afterward Rocky’s team failed to give the president the credit and attention he so badly wanted.
Lanier then remembers blowing up on Ehmann:
“I was like, man, you ungrateful motherf—-ers, you. I can’t believe you. … We didn’t ask you guys for nothing other than for you guys to be grateful. We just want you guys to be appreciative and say thank you.”
Ehmann stopped returning text messages at all at that point, and who can blame him? Rocky is worrying about losing his freedom, while the president only cares about securing a few more votes.
Lanier continued to Yahoo:
“All he had to do was do a two-minute call to say thank you. Rocky hasn’t even called us and said, ‘Hey, man, thank you guys. I appreciate it,’ in private. Just in private.”
