The president is known for his willingness, nay, eagerness to go low when it’s needed to get his way on a particular matter. Trump is quick to go for the slime-ball tactics when distressed, and with a man like the president, that leaves him going low pretty much every waking moment.
So after three years of talking about the alleged criminal behavior of former FBI Director James Comey only to be rebuked by a report from his own Inspector General, Trump is pretty furious, as can be seen on his Twitter page all day today.
Comey tweeted the following response:
The report exonerated Comey from any illegal activity involving his personal memos, and actually made the president’s handling of the matter look pretty bad.
Now, Trump’s allies, namely Mark Meadows and Jim Jordan, are pushing the matter with Rep. Elijah Cummings, asking for a hearing to be called to discuss Comey’s total legal breaking of FBI procedure.
In a letter to Cummings Friday, the pair said:
“In light of the great costs to our country stemming from Comey’s reckless conduct, we respectfully request that you immediately schedule a hearing with Inspector General Horowitz to examine the OIG [Office of Inspector General] report about Comey’s misconduct.”
Republicans are clearly trying to use this ‘misconduct’ as proof that top law enforcement officials were actually working against the president. This will solidify one of many conspiracy theories that the Trump team have put out there.
The letter continues:
“Because Comey’s compilation and dissemination of sensitive FBI information led directly to two-plus years of political turmoil and vitriolic partisan attacks on the president, the OIG’s report demands congressional attention.”
Trump attacked Comey Friday morning on Twitter, saying: “The disastrous IG Report on James Comey shows, in the strongest of terms, how unfairly I, and tens of millions of great people who support me, were treated. Our rights and liberties were illegally stripped away by this dishonest fool. We should be given our stolen time back?”
