WaPo Puts McConnell On Blast For Ignoring Mass Shootings

The United States’ Congress is broken. The nation’s lawmakers have stalled out, and the public is justifiably irate. Many legislators find more benefit in doing nothing than fulfilling even the most basic responsibilities. Their job is more important to them than saving the Democracy. The Washington Post had something to say and directed its sharp words at the most obstinate senator of all.

Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has been upset over his new nickname “Moscow Mitch,” but why? He has been working with a Moscow oligarch to build an aluminum plant in rural Kentucky. He would have preferred to be called the Senate’s “grim reaper,” because he has been proud of blocking the Senate’s door to any new legislation. Instead, he just works his little fingers to the bone packing the courts with conservative judges and justices.

The Washington Post has had it with McConnell. It wrote a full-page editorial listing all of the victims of gun violence. The editorial called out Senate Majority Leader McConnell in this bold headline:

‘Do something, Mr. McConnell.’

CNN’s host of Reliable Sources Brian Stelter tweeted:

@WashingtonPost is running a full-page editorial in Wednesday’s paper. It’s a message to @senatemajldr: “When the Senate returns from its Labor Day recess, it must act on guns.”‘

McConnell has had no intention of passing any bills, but said he might entertain Donald Trump’s suggestions. The senator said earlier in an interview with conservative radio talk-show host Hugh Hewitt, according to RealClearPolitics:

‘If the president is in favor of a number of things that he has discussed openly and publicly and I know that if we pass it, it will become law, I’ll put it on the floor.’

The editorial board asked what would motivate McConnell to act:

‘What if there was a mass shooting in the United States not once or twice or four or six times monthly, but every single day, a big one, the kind that electrifies social media and squats for days on Page 1 — would that be enough to move Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell from his insistent inertia on gun safety?’

Would “any volume of bloodshed convince” McConnell to act:

‘Would any volume of bloodshed convince the Kentucky Republican that Congress faces a moral imperative to act? Thirty-eight people were slain in three such shootings in August — in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, as well as West Texas — and still Senate Republicans and President Trump refuse to act.’

Obviously, a single law would not be effective. Yet, the editorial did offer this suggestion for the blocked Republicans:

‘Ban the sale of military-grade assault weapons. Unneeded by civilians, they are a blight on the nation, their ready availability a national disgrace. Eliminating them would slow the growth of this list. It would save lives.’

Then, the editorial listed people who had died at the hands of a mass shooter, a homegrown terrorist. It began with the Columbine High School massacre. The Washington Post could not include every person who died from gunshot wounds, but it made a good faith effort:
