The political world was again left reeling this weekend when The New York Times dropped a story highlighting even more allegations of sexual misconduct by now Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. He faced similar stories during his initial confirmation process, but he got through anyway thanks to Republican Senators — but now, figures including now another Democratic presidential primary candidate are calling for Kavanaugh to be removed from the bench. Former Obama administration official turned contender for the presidency Julián Castro insisted this weekend in a public statement posted to Twitter that Kavanaugh should be impeached.
He wrote, in two separate posts:
‘Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation is a shame to the Supreme Court. This latest allegation of assault must be investigated. It’s more clear than ever that Brett Kavanaugh lied under oath. He should be impeached. And Congress should review the failure of the Department of Justice to properly investigate the matter.’

The new piece from The Times outlined the cases of dozens of apparent at least potential witnesses to Kavanaugh’s misconduct that were never interviewed by the FBI, despite the effort of at least some of them to get in touch with authorities. During his initial confirmation battle, Kavanaugh did end up placed under oath to answer for some of these accusations, but he insisted that he did nothing wrong at any point. More and more people point in the exact opposite direction, depicting Kavanaugh as a liar with skeletons in his closet.
In addition to Castro, fellow Democratic presidential candidate and California Senator Kamala Harris has also called for Kavanaugh to be impeached in the wake of the new allegations against him
Outside groups like The Center for Popular Democracy, the Women’s March, and Demand Justice have done the same. They shared in a joint statement:
‘The evidence that Kavanaugh committed perjury in his Senate testimony is mounting. Brett Kavanaugh is unfit to sit as a Supreme Court justice in the face of so many credible allegations that he sexually assaulted these women. House Democrats must not delay in launching an impeachment probe… At this point, an impeachment inquiry in the House is the only appropriate way to conduct the fact-finding that Senate Republicans refused to conduct.’
