Apparently, even after all of the violent vitriol he’s spewed at almost every opportunity since taking office, President Donald Trump would like us to take him seriously and credibly. This Monday, he awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to former New York Yankees player Mariano Rivera, a move that of course considering his incessant usage of the site, Trump first announced on Twitter. Rivera is an immigrant, having been born in Panama, and Trump’s behavior has earned him avoidance and outright derision from a whole host of professional athletes from across the sports world at this point — but hey, it’s time to pretend like he’s Mr. Goody Two-Shoes, right?
‘In a short while I will be presenting the New York @Yankees @MarianoRivera, the greatest relief pitcher (Closer!) of all time, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the East Room of the @WhiteHouse!’
Yeah, that’s great — what about the large numbers of immigrants whose lives are getting upended by your own administration this very day, Trump? His administration recently scored a “victory” in that the U.S. Supreme Court allowed their plans to temporarily go into effect that block any asylum seekers from entry who first entered a third country. That plan — which U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services head Ken Cuccinelli said this past weekend would be implemented in “days” — essentially cuts off the asylum process to the entirety of Central America, excluding Mexico. If left on their own in Mexico or elsewhere, as a steadily increasing stream of stories has made clear, asylum seekers are prone to face physical hardship and violence. Some have been killed after getting sent back over the southern border.
But hey, there’s baseball, right?? Rivera is apparently personally a Trump supporter; he helped lead a fundraiser dinner for Trump in 2018 that cost as much as $50,000 a couple to attend. More recently, he’s served on the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition.
