In case you were wondering, House Oversight Committee ranking member Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) is still passionately committed to President Donald Trump. This weekend, he went on ABC’s This Week where he insisted that Trump asking China to investigate the Bidens was just an elaborate ruse to get a rise out of the press. What Jordan seems to be suggesting here is that while Trump does crimes like soliciting foreign election interference right on camera for all to see, he’s not really doing them, just pretend doing them, and it’s all a big inside joke.

Host George Stephanopoulos asked Jordan:

‘Do you think it’s appropriate for President Trump to ask China and Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden?’

And that was the beginning of the end, because Jordan refused to answer the question. Smirking like someone trying desperately to deflect attention from something, he replied:

‘George, do you really think that he was serious about thinking that China is going to investigate the Biden family?’

The host shot back:

‘He said it right there in public!’

Jordan continued:

‘I think as Senator Rubio said a couple days ago, I think he’s getting the press all spun up about this. Remember, this is the president who’s been tougher on China than any other president… and you really think he… now thinks oh, China is going to investigate the Bidens? He was just making a statement to just underscore how wrong it is with Hunter Biden getting these deals that he got. That’s all he’s doing… I think most Americans would say that’s exactly what the president was doing.’

It didn’t get better. Eventually, the host got Jordan to admit that he believed that the president was in the right to ask Ukraine to investigate the Bidens considering the supposed corruption that’s marked their family — which there’s still no evidence for, despite Republicans collectively losing their minds and pointing the same general direction. Trump has been revealed to have paused approved military aid to Ukraine while he pushed for that investigation into supposed corruption, overruling his staff in the process, who’d concluded the money was good to go.

Stephanopoulos asked Jordan the pointed question of whether Trump had ever turned his newfound supposed concern for corruption in Eastern Europe into asking about someone who wasn’t a domestic political opponent of Trump’s, but the belligerent Congressman had no answer. Instead, he just deflected again.

After Jordan’s performance on ABC, Trump took to Twitter with a similar argument, railing:

‘It is INCREDIBLE to watch and read the Fake News and how they pull out all stops to protect Sleepy Joe Biden… As lawyers & others have stated, as President, I have an OBLIGATION to look into possible, or probable, CORRUPTION!’

They all have good reason to be concerned. In response to the corruption at hand, House Democrats have been proceeding with an impeachment inquiry, which they’ve already issued a number of subpoenas as a part of.
