Donald Trump went too far when he shattered the country’s reputation with his one phone call to Turkish dictator Recep Erdogan. He opened the door for Turkey to burn the children of our Kurdish allies with white phosphorous, people who fought beside our military to eradicate ISIS. There are too many consequences and none that make any political sense.
Chief CBS Congressional Correspondent Nancy Cordes tweeted about a conversation she had with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). She said that Trump said McConnell had told him his call to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelelnsky was “perfect.”
Then, she asked McConnell to confirm that. The Kentucky senator told her that he had never spoken to POTUS about it. He appeared to be distancing himself from the president. Cordes tweeted:
‘A couple weeks ago, @realDonaldTrump said that @senatemajldr told him that his call w/President Zelensky was “perfect” and “innocent”. But when I asked McConnell about that just now, he said he never spoke to the President about it. So was Trump lying? “You’d have to ask him.”’
C-SPAN Capitol Hill Political Producer Craig Caplan tweeted that McConnell was willing to “discuss” an impeachment trial in the Senate:
‘McConnell on future Senate impeachment trial: “If this were to come over from the House, I’m sure Senator Schumer and I would sit down and discuss coming to an agreement on a process…On the implementation, the balls and strikes, if you will, are called by the Chief Justice.”‘
Then, McConnell added that the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court John Roberts would call “the balls and strikes.” He would, but only if the Senate took up the impeachment and removal from office case:
‘McConnell on future Senate impeachment trial: “If this were to come over from the House, I’m sure Senator Schumer and I would sit down and discuss coming to an agreement on a process…On the implementation, the balls and strikes, if you will, are called by the Chief Justice.”‘
