Pelosi Slams Cowardly Republican Senators In Monday Takedown

Under the leadership of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), House Democrats are continuing their formal impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump. Democratic investigators have yet to garner the support of the vast majority of Republican leaders, with just a tiny handful of them acknowledging that an impeachment inquiry is in order following revelations of Trump’s corruption. This Monday morning, Pelosi denounced Republicans who’ve opted to cower in the shadows rather than face the reality of the situation.

In a Twitter post, she linked to an article in The Washington Post in which one person described simply as a “veteran Republican Senator” insists that the whole impeachment situation feels like a “horror movie” and supposedly was speaking for a “consensus” among Senate Republicans.

Pelosi had a simple message in response, sharing on Twitter and including a quote from the article:

‘Look to your oath. “Republican senators are lost and adrift as the impeachment inquiry enters its second month, navigating the grave threat to President Trump largely in the dark, frustrated by the absence of a credible case to defend his conduct…”’

She added:

‘It’s been more than a month and Republicans in Washington still won’t answer the simple question: is it appropriate for a president to pressure a foreign country to undermine our elections? Every national security expert knows the answer.’

As Pelosi notes, every single member of Congress took an oath to “protect and defend” the Constitution of the United States of America. That document forbids things like presidents benefiting financially from their office, as Trump has done. The document also lays down the clear groundwork for the completely out of line nature of Trump’s insistence on looking to foreign governments for election help and then insisting that he did nothing wrong. Yet, Republican Senators continue to agonize over their next move.

Should the Democratic majority in the House decide to approve formal articles of impeachment, the case would move to the Senate, at which time Republican Senators would have to make a “final decision” about what stance they’re going to take in the face of the continuing mountains of evidence that Dems have accumulated. This includes admissions like top Ukraine diplomat Bill Taylor’s assertion that the Trump administration tied “everything” Ukraine wanted to them producing dirt on the Bidens. Discussing those Republican Senators, The Post notes the “historic reckoning that likely awaits them.”
