President Donald Trump continues to fail to rise to the basic leadership tasks associated with the presidency. This Sunday, he took to Twitter to address the ongoing wildfires in California that have again threatened the safety of large groups of people all around the state. The perpetually ego-obsessed wannabe dictator did not have a single word of support for those who have struggled through the situation, which has included destroyed homes and livelihoods. Instead, he simply whined about the state’s leaders, insisting with essentially no evidence that the fires are their own personal faults because of supposed forest mismanagement.
The egomania went well on from there, as Trump targeted a whistleblower and claimed there was great pro-Trump energy a UFC fight he visited this weekend despite the videos of boos that we call can watch.
Covering California, as some kind of attempt at petty punitive behavior, Trump insisted “no more” federal government money would be going to help them fight the fires and recover from the damage, although how this tweet will translate into actual policy is still very much a wide-open question.
‘The Governor of California… has done a terrible job of forest management. I told him from the first day we met that he must “clean” his forest floors regardless of what his bosses, the environmentalists, DEMAND of him… Every year, as the fire’s rage & California burns, it is the same thing-and then he comes to the Federal Government for $$$ help. No more… You don’t see close to the level of burn in other states… Also, open up the ridiculously closed water lanes coming down from the North. Don’t pour it out into the Pacific Ocean.’
There are so many issues in that self-obsessed rant. To begin with, Trump’s implication that cleaning out forests as a way to curtail fires is his personal idea is absolutely outlandish, although he’s long already taken it to such an extreme that at one point he said the issue was that California didn’t “rake” their forests.
Also — Trump seems completely ignorant of the basics of climate here. Him noting that fires don’t rock other states at the same level is on par with him noting that Finland didn’t burn at the same rate as California. California is the place with the heat. Also — it goes on — his suggestion that water that could be used to fight the fires is getting dumped into the Pacific Ocean is still ludicrous. When he made it in 2018 and a reporter asked a spokesperson for the then-governor what he was talking about, they said simply:
‘Your guess is as good as mine.’
That’s the level we’re at with this guy.
Besides the above, Trump also demanded to know the identity of a whistleblower whose complaint help sparked the impeachment inquiry. Trump was previously caught on tape quipping that the whistleblower should be executed, so this demand definitely doesn’t come without baggage.
