Donald Trump left the expedited two-day NATO summit early. His feelings were hurt when a video showing four world leaders laughing at the U.S. president’s expense went viral. Now, that the president is back a the White House, what is the official response to this event?
The commander-in-chief has notoriously thin skin and holds a grudge for decades. He punches back, 10 times harder than he perceived he had been hit. It was left to the White House Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway to respond to the mess Trump had left.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was at the center of the viral video joking about Trump. The small knot of men around him appeared to be quite jovial as they made fun of POTUS screwing up the scheduling. They intimated that the American president selfishly grabbed the reporters’ camera time.
Conway appeared on Fox & Friends and claimed that Trudeau’s behavior was “childish:”
‘I imagine the relationship will be the same, because at least President Trump is honest when he’s calling out a foreign leader and the way he feels about them when they’re not paying their dues to NATO. I thought it was a very … churlish exchange, but they were hardly denouncing the president’s policies they were hardly denouncing him,” she added. “People looked at this as they usually do on social media with outsized attention.’
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation ran the clip in question on Tuesday. It showed British Prime Ministers Trudeau and the United Kingdom’s Boris Johnson and France’s President Emmanuel Macron in an open room joking.
Trudeau referred to the extended period Trump allowed for reporters’ questions as the NATO Secretary General and former Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, sat waiting. The room noise caused the world leaders’ voices to fade in and out on the video.
‘He was late because he takes a 40-minute press conference off the top. You just watched his team’s jaws drop to the floor.’
The next morning, Trump called Trudeau “two-faced.” However, he was politically savvy enough to reel his comment back a moment later. He called Trudeau “a nice guy.”
Conway said that these powerful men were not coming down on Trump’s policies. She added that our neighbor to the north had supported the U.S. president’s U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement. It currently sits in Congress waiting for approval. The counselor continued:
‘What was it really about? It was about the fact that President Trump commands a room, and he does. And maybe that makes a couple of people jealous and certainly churlish. I just thought it was… childish and churlish, but it doesn’t affect the relationship between the two countries.’
In his Thursday morning tweets, Trump patted himself on the back for doing a good job at the summit. He did not accept the jibe. Instead, the U.S. president claimed he had good relationships with these world leaders, in spite of the viral video and some tension in his meeting with Macron.
Joe Biden did not let any grass grow under his feet. He released this ad playing off of the viral video:
‘The world is laughing at President Trump. They see him for what he really is: dangerously incompetent and incapable of world leadership.
‘We cannot give him four more years as commander in chief.’
