Pence Rejects Schiff Request For Information On Ukraine Call

Democrats have requested information on a call between Vice President Mike Pence and the president of Ukraine as the impeachment investigation continues. On Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told chairmen to proceed with drafting articles of impeachment.

However, Pence’s office turned down the request for information on the Ukraine call, saying it doesn’t know what impeachment investigators want. Pence spokeswoman Katie Waldman said:

‘Because Adam Schiff continues to operate in an underhanded manner, the Office of the Vice President does not even know what he wants declassified. It’s simply further proof that this shoddy committee is pursuing a sham investigation.’

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) sent a letter to Pence on Friday asking him to declassify supplemental testimony from aide Jennifer Williams over his September 18 phone call with Ukraine President Zelensky.

According to USA Today:

‘Schiff said the committee “strongly believes there is no legitimate basis” to keep details of the call “classified,” and noted that Pence himself has said he has no problem with release of a transcript.’

House Democrats have been investigating the likelihood that Mr. Trump and others pressured Ukraine President Zelensky and other Ukraine officials into investigating Democratic political opponents. The other part central to the investigation has to been to find out whether Trump withheld military aid from Ukraine until Zelensky followed through with his request.

USA Today reported:

‘Pence has denied any involvement in any plan to pressure Zelensky, telling WISN 12 News in Wisconsin that he was “not aware of the allegations that U.S. aid to Ukraine was tied to investigations at any point before those matters became public in September.”‘

House Democratic officials have said that Pence is among top officials

‘who were either knowledgeable of or active participants in an effort to extract from a foreign nation the personal political benefits sought by the president.’

Mr. Trump, Vice President Pence, and those aligned with them have called the impeachment investigation a “sham.” One foreign policy officer who works for the State Department, Williams, did provide information to the House Intelligence Committee including a discussion of Pence’s interactions with Zelensky.

USA Today reported:

‘Williams also told the committee that she regarded Trump’s July 25 phone call with Zelensky – in which Trump discussed investigations of campaign opponents – as “unusual and inappropriate.”‘

In November, Trump tweeted his criticism of Williams, saying:

‘(She) should meet with the Never Trumpers, who I don’t know & mostly never even heard of, & work out a better presidential attack!’

There has been speculation for awhile about how much Pence knew about the July 25 Ukraine call. Pence and Ukraine President Zelenky met on September 1 in a windowless conference room of the Marriott in downtown Warsaw.

According to USA Today:

‘Pence, surrounded by both sides’ aides and Cabinet members, did not specifically discuss with Zelensky the reasons behind the hold, according to testimony in House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump’s dealings with Ukraine. Instead, Pence assured Zelensky that the United States was fully behind Ukraine and that he would talk to Trump to try to get the assistance released.’
