Fox’s Chris Wallace’s Startling Comey Interview Has Trump Shaken

Fox News anchor Chris Wallace agreed to an interview with former FBI Director, James Comey on Sunday morning. It showed how unfortunate the timing of the Republican/Democratic split has been in affecting Congressional oversight. Wallace went straight into the meat of his inquiry.

The anchor noted that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant had some real problems:

‘Exclusively on FOX News Sunday: Chris Wallace asks Former FBI Director James Comey if the IG Report vindicates him. Director Comey responds to previous statements he made in 2018 about the Carter Page FISA warrant being handled appropriately: “There was real sloppiness.” ‘

Comey said that the Stelle Dossier was unreliable and agreed the new IG report found some “FBI mishandling:”

‘James Comey talks about the reliability of the Steele Dossier on FOX News Sunday amid a new IG report that finds FBI mishandling during the origins of the Russia probe.’

Wallace tried over and over to get Comey to go into the Steele dossier and the FISA request. Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign expert, Carter Page was severely mishandled, it appeared.
The CNN anchor asked Comey about the Horowitz report::

‘A central question is role of Steele dossier. You say it was part of a broader mosaic, (Justice Department Inspector General Michael) Horowitz says [it] played a central role.’

Comey answered the “central question:”

‘I’m not sure he and I are saying different things. What his report says is that the FBI thought it was a close call until they got the Steele report, put that additional information in and that tipped it over to be probable cause. It’s a long FISA application and includes Steele material and lots of other things, I don’t think we’re saying different things.’

Wallace responded with a brief but powerful remark:

‘I think you are, sir.’

The Fox News host dug ever deeper into Comey defending the FBI. Wallace reminded the former FBI Director to watch out what he was asking for — the consequences. After all, the Horowitz Report showed that Comey did not go “hands-on.”
Wallace also went after Comey on the former director’s defense of the FBI. He spoke about the series of missteps outlined in the Horowitz report and asked why he didn’t take a more hands-on role in such an important investigation.
In one exchange, Wallace told Comey:

‘You make it sound like you’re a bystander, an eyewitness. You were the director of the FBI while a lot of this was going on, sir.’

Comey responded:

”Sure, I’m responsible. That’s why I’m telling you I was wrong. I was overconfident as director in our procedures. And it’s important that a leader be accountable and transparent. If I were still director, I’d be saying exactly the same thing that Chris Wray is saying, which is we are going to get to the bottom of this. Because the most important question is, is it systemic? Are there problems in other cases?’
