This week, President Donald Trump is slated to become the third U.S. president to be impeached when the House votes on and presumably approves formal articles of impeachment. In the meantime, he’s continuing to desperately lash out against those daring to try and hold him accountable for his well-documented corruption. This Monday, following a belligerent Twitter rant about the supposedly “United Republican Party” — a term which many mocked — Nebraska state Senator John McCollister, who is a Republican, publicly took the president to task and called on fellow Republicans to join him — and he got a substantive response.

McCollister and many of those who commented in response to him argued that Trump can not count on some bulwark of Republican support while proceeding through impeachment. They say that many conservatives oppose Trump’s belligerence, even if separately, a Trump personality cult continues to wreak havoc under the GOP banner.

McCollister tweeted:

‘“United Republican Party?” No There are Republicans ALL OVER the country who want you impeached. We don’t fall for some cult of personality. We’ve read the constitution. If you are one of these Republicans, tell me why and I’ll retweet good replies.’

So far, only one Congressional Republican has come out in favor of impeachment — and they’re not even a Republican anymore. Michigan’s Justin Amash announced his support for impeachment and subsequently revealed that he’d be leaving the GOP, which Trump responded to by wishing good riddance to the “dumb and disloyal” Congressman. Since when was loyalty a measure of political aptitude?

Although Congressional Republicans have fallen in line, McCollister got quite a few replies. One Twitter user — whose post got significant engagement — commented:

‘As a REAL Republican that is for balancing the budget, limiting / not eliminating regulations, taxes that are fair and balanced for all, etc… I am also for getting this FAKE REPUBLICAN extreme radical right weirdo @realDonaldTrump out of office ASAP and ANY way that works.’

Another commented that they’d be leaving the Republican Party, explaining:

‘I’ve been a life-long Republican…Until Donald Trump I had never voted for a non-republican. He is without question the most corrupt president we’ve ever had. I support impeachment and removal. Furthermore, I can’t support a party that stands behind someone like Trump. I’m out.’

Check out more of the conversation below. McCollister has called out the national GOP before — after a white supremacy-fueled mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, he insisted that they’re enabling white supremacy.
