With dignity and grace, House Speaker Pelosi entered the House of Representatives. The most powerful woman in the country knows that she has been given a solemn duty. As the second in line to the presidency only after the vice president, twice, she has already made history. Wednesday she dressed appropriately, for where the people’s representatives will vote their character not their party.
This is only the third time in our country’s history that a president has been impeached. The Democrats are not sad that Donald J. Trump is being impeached. No, this is about far more than one man. They are sad that he has brought this nation so close to disaster that they must act. The need to impeach is not a win in the patriarchial sense. It is only a terrible destination. In order to address that solemnity, some of the women in the House of Representatives chose to make a statement of:
‘Justice. Dignity. Solemnity. Sisterhood.’

Perhaps, it is the difference between women and men that made it so difficult for the men to understand that an impeachment of any kind brings no joy to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She entered the House of the people in a dress that reflected her solemn duty. The speaker wore a black, long-sleeved dress to vote on the two articles of impeachment, to write history.
She was not alone. The mood was serious in Congress, and other women dressed accordingly, although there was no dress code.
The Representative from New York, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wore a knee-length, deeply-colored dress beneath a long black coat.
Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) wore a black blazer. She commented, according to The Daily Beast:
‘I’m not shocked that we are here today.’
