This Wednesday, President Donald Trump was scheduled to become the third president in U.S. history to be impeached via a full House vote on articles of impeachment charging him with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. As debate on the House floor got underway, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) spoke out against the president’s ongoing behavior as a continued threat to national security, which roundly undercuts the Republican talking point that Democrats are simply pursuing impeachment as quickly as possible to accumulate a win. In reality, while impeachment proceedings have been underway, personal Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani went to Ukraine to continue drumming up opposition to Trump’s domestic political opponents, which is exactly what originally sparked impeachment.

Pelosi shared:

‘What we are discussing today is the established fact that the president, again, violated the Constitution… It is a matter of fact that the President is an ongoing threat to our national security… The president used the power of his office to obtain an improper personal political benefit at the expense of our national security… This abuse of power also jeopardizes the integrity of our elections. All Americans agree that American voters should choose our president: not some foreign government… When the President’s wrongdoing was revealed, he launched an unprecedented, indiscriminate and categorical campaign of defiance and obstruction. Never before in the history of our nation have we seen a president declare and act as if he is above the law.’

Trump has literally, repeatedly made that proclamation, saying — wrongly — that he can do whatever he wants.

Pelosi has faced harsh criticism from the president recently as the House’s part of the impeachment proceedings has neared its end. The other day, he even mockingly claimed (wrongly, of course) that Pelosi’s teeth were falling out at a press conference.

He followed that up with a rambling, outlandish six-page letter to Pelosi this Tuesday in which his patently ridiculous claims included an assertion that she’s lying when she says she prays for the president. He called those claims of prayer an affront on religious Americans, alongside his other also ridiculous claims, like that the impeachment proceedings (which are specifically provided for by the Constitution) are somehow unconstitutional.

He even claimed that he’s been treated worse than the targets of the Salem Witch Trials, during which young women were hung on charges of witchcraft. Separately, he also called the supposed injustice of the proceedings more serious than any other political scandal in U.S. history — but remember, the U.S. has hosted things like slavery.

Pelosi responded to the letter by sharing:

‘I don’t have a reaction. It’s ridiculous… I mean, I haven’t fully read it. We’ve been working. I’ve seen the essence of it. It’s really sick.’

As the impeachment proceedings kept going, Trump kept lashing out. Although the White House had previously claimed that he’d be working throughout the day — and not watching the historic proceedings — he ranted in all caps on Twitter:

‘SUCH ATROCIOUS LIES BY THE RADICAL LEFT, DO NOTHING DEMOCRATS. THIS IS AN ASSAULT ON AMERICA, AND AN ASSAULT ON THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!!!!’

In other words, he’s losing it. The duly proceeding impeachment proceedings, which a federal judge has even ruled are enough of a judicial procedure to warrant the release of grand jury material from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, are not an “ASSAULT ON AMERICA!!!!” They’re just not.
