This Wednesday, President Donald Trump was scheduled to become the third U.S. president to be impeached with a full House vote on articles of impeachment charging him with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Both of the charges stem from the Ukraine scandal and its aftermath, in which Trump tried to get dirt on his domestic political rivals from Ukraine in exchange for military aid for the country and then proceeded to categorically refuse to cooperate with Congressional investigators. Although much of the evidence is publicly available, early this Wednesday, Trump lashed out with a furious, all caps Twitter meltdown proclaiming his supposed innocence.
He shouted:
‘SUCH ATROCIOUS LIES BY THE RADICAL LEFT, DO NOTHING DEMOCRATS. THIS IS AN ASSAULT ON AMERICA, AND AN ASSAULT ON THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!!!!’

Democrats have not lied. Besides, how could they even manage some kind of tower of lies when they’ve made so much of their evidence public? It is flatly not a lie that Trump abruptly halted aid for Ukraine while he, his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, and some of his other associates like E.U. Ambassador Gordon Sondland told Ukraine that “everything” they wanted from the U.S. would be contingent upon them investigating the Bidens. These are not lies. They are publicly demonstrable facts.
His meltdown attempting to prove otherwise mirrors the absolutely unhinged anti-impeachment letter that he sent House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) this week. In that letter, he claimed — among other things — that he’s been treated worse than the subjects of the Salem Witch Trials.
Republican attempts at defenses have included the claim that Trump was simply concerned about corruption, but there’s no evidence for this. In a highly scrutinized July phone conversation with the Ukrainian president, he never mentioned “corruption.” He only mentioned the Bidens. Now, he’s set to go down in history as the president who ranted and raved on Twitter as Congress closed in with consequences for corruption.
