There has been much focus on the negative, fearful, rage-induced, and divisive side of American life and its politicians. Yet, there is much cause to celebrate hope and optimism. President Barack Obama could always rise above his own self and offer the country a view of all that is good. This is what he said for the New Year.
People may feel as if they may have lived in a dark time. Yet, Obama’s greeting celebrated the new generation where he has been working with young people about their place in this great country. He offered optimism and reminders of inviting those who were different from us into our community. He spoke to the “common bond” that exists among all people.
After all, more women ran for office and most won. The Women’s March was the largest in history. Obama looked to the innovations and courage people had to remake this political environment
After all, he has always been the president of hope. He reminded Americans of what values we share, no matter the party. This has been a year of Democrats, independents, and yes Republicans remembering that we are all Americans. Trumpism has tried to divide us and lead us into a dark place, but Obama reminded of us of the good.
His wish to each of us for a happy and hopeful New Year was a reminder that people do have power to vote, to march, to run to replace Trumpism and win. His message reminded Americans we are have always been joined together through our values, our patriotism, and our common good.
