Following the House’s formal impeachment of President Donald Trump last week on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has delayed transmitting the case to the Senate for a trial while pressuring Senate Republicans, who are in the majority, to hold an actually fair trial. While Republican criticism continues to pile up, she’s not about to suddenly stop caring about that fairness, as she made clear in a Twitter post this Monday. She zeroed in on the fact that the president’s complaints about simple requests for witnesses and evidence have not proven legitimate.
She shared:

Indeed — during the House’s portion of the proceedings, Trump and his allies completely made up that investigators were “trampling” on the president’s due process rights — or something. They were not, however. They were simply hosting fact-finding hearings, and once they started Judiciary Committee hearings about the impeachment process itself, they invited the president’s team — but they refused to show up, and Trump kept complaining about the process anyway. In reality, there is little to no substantive basis for the president’s dramatic refusals other than that he knows he’s got something to hide. It’s not like the evidence that’s come out so far has been in his favor!
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and his colleagues have rushed to the president’s defense all the same.
He brazenly lied about Democratic concerns the day after impeachment, when he tweeted;
‘Last night, House Democrats passed the thinnest, weakest presidential impeachment in American history. Now they’re suggesting they are too afraid to even submit their accusations to the Senate and go to trial. The prosecutors are getting cold feet in front of the entire country.’
At present, the process remains at a stalemate.
