Trump Makes Abrupt Pre-Christmas North Korea Announcement

Although in his own words, he’s never even understood, uh, wind, President Donald Trump would like us to take him seriously when he says he’s ready to respond to any military provocation by North Korea. The country has repeatedly conducted short range missile tests in the time since talks between their regime and the Trump administration fell apart earlier this year, and they’ve promised a “Christmas gift” for the U.S. if those talks stay stalled without U.S. concessions through the holidays. This Tuesday — Christmas Eve — Trump downplayed the situation to reporters, which hearkened back to the times he’s touted his special relationship with North Korea’s murderous dictator Kim Jong Un.

Shortly after videoconferencing with members of the military from his Florida Mar-a-Lago resort, Trump told reporters after getting asked about the North Korean threat:

‘Oh that’s OK, we’ll find out what the surprise is and we’ll deal with it very successfully. Let’s see what happens. Everybody’s got surprises for me, but let’s see what happens. I handle them as they come along… We’ll see what happens. Maybe it’s a nice present. maybe it’s a present where he sends me a beautiful vase as opposed to a missile test. I may get a nice present from him. You never know.’

There is absolutely no immediate indication that the “gift” is anything other than military antagonism in line with the kind of provocations that North Korea has delivered over and over again while Trump’s been in office. Trump’s the one who said that he “fell in love” with Kim, not the other way around. Just recently, after Trump apparently yet again referred to the North Korean leader as “rocket man,” North Korea even suggested that they were ready to start publicly calling Trump things like “dotard” again.

It’s not as though these fails come after any kind of substantive growth to hang onto. The temporary relationship between Trump and Kim, which included the first one-on-one meeting between a U.S. president and North Korean leader and the first visit of a U.S. president to North Korean soil, was marked by, uh, highlights like Trump rushing to Twitter to praise how supposedly big his button is with which he could launch a nuclear attack.

Now, much of Trump’s focus is trained on the impeachment proceedings against him. The House recently approved charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, thereby teeing up an impeachment trial in the Senate, which has been delayed over Republicans’ insistence that they will not be fair.

Trump seems to be completely on board with their pledges against fairness. Going with his false presupposition that the House process was unfair, Trump tweeted:

‘Wouldn’t it be reasonable to assume that Republicans in the Senate should handle the Impeachment Hoax in the exact same manner as Democrats in the House handled their recent partisan scam? Why would it be different for Republicans than it was for the Radical Left Democrats?’

The thing is — Democrats’ process was completely laid out in the open, accessible, and fair. Trump’s just freaking out.
