Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) was well aware of what cruel and bitter criticism he would face after his decision to vote “guilty” in the Donald Trump’s impeachment trial. In spite of that, he decided to do what was true to his duty, conviction, and religion. The far-right conservative talk show host Laura Ingraham and the president promised sharp retribution.
Trump wrote, according to The Washington Post:
‘Had failed presidential candidate @MittRomney devoted the same energy and anger to defeating a faltering Barack Obama as he sanctimoniously does to me, he could have won the election.’
Ingraham went even further, calling for the former Massachusetts governor to resign. She accused him of choosing the Democrats “over common sense and conservatism:”
‘If he were up for reelection this year, the people of Utah would have their own payback against him because they were defrauded by Romney,’
The talk show host claimed that she would even move to Utah and run against Romney:
‘We won’t ever forget. Utah should never forget.’
She said that the religious senator should quit, because:
‘You committed a fraud on the people of Utah, on the Republican Party, on the Constitution.’
Romney told Fox News’ Chris Wallace about his decision, saying he believed his actions were “what is right:”
‘I know in my heart that I’m doing what is right. I understand there’s going to be an enormous consequence. And I don’t have a choice in that regard.’
Ingraham called Romney:
‘Utah’s junior senator reminded us of why he couldn’t connect with most regular, working-class people. They don’t like politicians who claim to be holier than thou when they’re really just sticking a shiv in your back. He’s the ultimate selfish, preening, self-centered politician.’
The ultra-conservative continue, saying that the people in Utah would “have their own payback:”
‘If he were up for reelection this year, the people of Utah would have their own payback against him because they were defrauded by Romney. For when he had to choose, he chose [Senate Minority Leader Charles] Schumer and [Sen.] Kamala [Harris] over common sense and conservatism. If you’re one of Romney’s constituents in Utah, you’re out of luck. If you’re a business in need of regulation reexamined, don’t bother calling his office. He has no power anymore.’
Then, the talk show host reminded listeners that Romney had run against President Barack Obama in 2012:
‘We thought you’d be better for America, and the way you repay millions of people, the millions who did vote for you in 2012, is to throw in with the very people who don’t share our goals, who hate us and, by the way, who still hate you.’
She continued, accusing him that he had “committed a fraud:”
‘Mitt, you made your stand. Now you should resign. You committed a fraud on the people of Utah, on the Republican Party, on the Constitution, and have thoroughly embarrassed yourself. If I have to move there to run against him in four and a half years, I will.’
Conversely, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) commented on the Romney vote, say it was “very courageous.”
