There is now plenty of evidence that shows that Russia interfered in the 2016 elections and that the Trump campaign likely colluded with Russia to get the president elected. This hasn’t stopped Russia from interfering in U.S. matters though.
On Saturday, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the leader of Russia’s pro-nationalist Liberal Democratic party, issued his congratulations to Mr. Trump on his acquittal. He tweeted:
‘I congratulate you on your victory in the Senate and the failure of vile and false accusations against you. Today you are the model leader of a huge modern state and the strongest president the US have ever had.’
He decided that he did not say enough though and went as far as slamming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT).
Zhirinovsky even went another step further and proposed having a dinner at Mar-a-Lago to celebrate at Russia’s expense.
The catalyst for Trump’s impeachment inquiry was his July 25 phone call with Ukraine President Zelensky, in which the president was accused of withholding almost $400 million in military aid in order to pressure Zelensky to conduct an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden and son Hunter Biden.
Even after all of the evidence presented in relation to the Russian hacking of the 2016 election, Trump still insisted at a 2018 press conference with Putin that he “didn’t see any reason why it would be Russia.”
Fiona Hill, a former White House adviser on Russia, testified before the House Intelligence Committee saying:
‘These fictions are harmful even if they are deployed for purely domestic political purposes. When we are consumed by partisan rancor, we cannot combat these external forces as they seek to divide us, degrade our institutions and destroy the faith of the American people and our democracy.’
