After Mr. Trump and Attorney General William Barr’s interference in the process, the Justice Department lowered the sentencing requirement for associate Roger Stone. Barr has pleaded with Trump to stop tweeting about ongoing justice matters and has complained about the results of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.
Now, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) is blasting Trump for the lowering of Stone’s sentence. In a series of tweets, she said that “Roger Stone’s sentencing is dangerous & a threat to our democracy.” She said the president “acts like a mafia boss.”
Twitter erupted in mass agreement with Rep. Waters:
It is worth noting again that Waters mentioned the letter signed by 2,000 former Justice Department officials calling on Barr to resign amidst the scandal. Trump is engaging in seriously unethical and possibly illegal behavior.
The Federal Judge Association has also scheduled a meeting regarding the Justice Department’s actions. The president, U.S. District Judge Cynthia Rufe said the matter “could not wait” until the spring conference.
Originally, prosecutors had suggested that Stone serve a seven to nine year sentence after being convicted of lying to Congress and witness tampering. At that point the Justice Department intervened to request a “far less” sentence.
According to MSN News:
‘The Justice Department’s involvement has prompted several Democrats to call for the attorney general’s resignation.
‘Trump also granted presidential pardons to four individuals Tuesday: former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevic (D), former New York Police Commissioner Bernie Kerik, financier Michael Milken and former San Francisco 49ers owner Edward DeBartolo, Jr.’
