Former Senator and Attorney General (AG) Jeff Sessions is finding out that you cannot go home after you leave. Just one week after Super Tuesday, the Alabama primary runoff has Sessions competing for the 2020 Senate race.

The new Cygnal poll reported that former Auburn Tigers football coach Tommy Tuberville is running against the former senator, and things are not looking good for Sessions. Whichever candidate wins the primary will face off against the most vulnerable Democrat, Senator Doug Jones. The Alabama senator ran against alleged child molester Roy Moore. The sitting senator risked his seat by voting for impeaching Donald Trump.

Tuberville carried 52 percent of likely GOP primary voters who planned to vote Tuesday. Sessions only had 40 percent. The former coach was ahead on over a dozen different directions.

After two decades as the Alabama senator, Trump plucked Sessions out of the Senate for his AG. Soon after he took office, the AG recused himself from managing the Special Counsel Robert Muller III investigation. Sessions had worked on the Trump presidential campaign, and recusal was the only legal option open to him.

The president never forgave his AG and did his best to force him to quit. After unbelievable continuous abuse, Sessions finally relented.

Trump tweeted:

‘This is what happens to someone who loyally gets appointed Attorney General of the United States & then doesn’t have the wisdom or courage to stare down & end the phony Russia Witch Hunt.’

Cygnal’s VP of Research and Analysis Chris Kratzer said:

‘Starting at a 12-point deficit is going to be a big hurdle for Sessions to get over, especially if he continues to draw the ire – and tweets – of the President.’

Cygnal CEO and Founder Brent Buchanan said:

‘Jeff Sessions’ unfavorability has continued to increase among GOP Primary voters over the course of the primary season. Now that Trump has gotten involved, it’s unlikely the former attorney general will be able to overcome the gap in how voters see Tuberville’s as more strongly favorable. Trump may not be able to pull a candidate across the finish line, but he sure can keep a candidate from getting there first.’

Cygnal originated what it describes as “the probabilistic mixed-mode survey.” The company has been called:

‘The most accurate firm in the nation by  pioneered by Cygnal – who was named the most accurate firm in the nation by The New York Times in 2018 – was conducted on March 6 – 8 with 645 likely Republican voters giving the poll a margin of error of ±3.86%.’

The company decided to handle the survey via the internet, reflecting how “voters now communicate with more people:”

‘Interviews were conducted using an online sample acquired via email and SMS invitations sent to known registered voters and filled in with Interactive Voice Response (IVR) to landline phones. This methodology reflects the way voters now communicate with more people using online communication than answering phone calls.’
