Pretend General Donald J. Trump has reported for not-duty, dressed for battle. Unfortunately, he has no idea how to handle a crisis of this magnitude. His dislike for strong women is well-known, especially House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). Yet, the Speaker is not one to give up in the face of adversity. She called on POTUS to implement the Defense Production Act.
This act works like car manufacturers geared up to build fighter planes during World War II (WWII) This act mobilizes private industry to ramp up production in the name of national security. Private businesses could start moving to provide medical providers what they direly need right now. Some providers are down to their last face masks, and they cannot get tests to see whether they have and are carrying coronavirus.
Pelosi released a statement urging Trump to deal with the cascading toolbox of materials he had at his disposal and that would address widespread national shortages. Medical providers urgently need masks, test supplies, ventilators, protective equipment, and more. He has balked for fantasy reasons, and then he tweeted:
‘I only signed the Defense Production Act to combat the Chinese Virus should we need to invoke it in a worst case scenario in the future. Hopefully there will be no need, but we are all in this TOGETHER!’
Last week, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) inexplicably gave the Senate a long weekend and five full days before dealing with the House’s coronavirus legislation. The House could have handed off their bill to McConnell on Saturday. Last week, 57 House Democrats wrote a letter to Trump urging him to implement the Defense Production Act.
POTUS noted that he had signed the act, but he just did not feel like implementing it yet. Pelosi released an urgent statement:
‘Right now, shortages of critical medical and personal protective equipment are harming our ability to fight the coronavirus epidemic, endangering frontline workers and making it harder to care for those who fall ill.’
The most powerful woman in the United States continued “There is not a day to lose:”
‘The President must immediately use the powers of the Defense Production Act to mass produce and coordinate distribution of these critical supplies, before the need worsens and the shortages become even more dire. Â There is not a day to lose. Â We must put more testing, more protective equipment and more ventilators into the hands of our frontline workers immediately.
On Wednesday, Trump addressed the issue, according to NBC News:
‘I view it as, in a sense, a wartime president. I mean, that’s what we’re fighting. It’s a war It spread violently. It’s a very, very contagious virus.’
Why would the president sign the act but not implement it? This is what he said:
‘I only signed the Defense Production Act to combat the Chinese Virus should we need to invoke it in a worst case scenario in the future. Hopefully there will be no need, but we are all in this TOGETHER!’
Pelosi warned him against waiting. Any delay would be a huge blunder. She noted that he should:
‘[I]mmediately [begin] mass produce and coordinate distribution of these critical supplies, before the need worsens and the shortages become even more dire.’ There is not a day to lose. We must put more testing, more protective equipment and more ventilators into the hands of our frontline workers immediately.’
