Trump Freaks Out Over Media COVID-19 Coverage

Over 1,700 Americans have died from the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak, and what are President Donald Trump’s current priorities? Whining about the media, of course. This Saturday morning, he freaked out on Twitter over media coverage of his administration’s response to the Coronavirus, insisting — with no apparent evidence to back him up whatsoever — that mainstream media sources simply make up stories. A self-obsessed, reality-detached president is exactly not the kind of person that should be handling the U.S. response to a deadly pandemic.

He claimed:

‘So much of the Lamestream Media is writing and broadcasting stories with facts that are made up and knowingly wrong. They are doing it by quoting unnamed sources that simply do not exist. These are very dangerous & corrupt people, who will do anything to win. NAME YOUR SOURCES!’

Again — this claim itself is completely baseless. He is instigating virulent hatred of the media among his base on the basis of lies about their operations. What does he want people to do when it comes to issues of surviving the Coronavirus outbreak? The media are the ones with the information, in many cases. Perhaps he’d like his followers to simply take his personal Twitter feed as the be-all, end-all, which would certainly amplify his attempt to take on totalitarian qualities.

Later, Trump continued:

‘One of the reasons that Fake News has become so prevalent & far reaching is the fact that corrupt “journalists” base their stories on SOURCES that they make up in order to totally distort a narrative or story.’

And again — there is no evidence for this claim. He didn’t even attempt to include any evidence in his tweet. He’s simply asking his followers to disbelieve just about anyone and everyone but himself, which is wildly dangerous.

Recently, Trump’s targets for complaints among media reporting have included the report that he phoned former baseball star Alex Rodriguez for Coronavirus advice and reporting about his public insistence that he wants governors to be “appreciative” of his administration.

As he put it at a public press conference:

All I want them to do — very simple — I want them to be appreciative. I don’t want them to say things that aren’t true. … You know what I say? ‘If they don’t treat you right, I don’t call.’

People’s lives are on the line, and this is the nonsense that Trump is peddling. He won’t let go of his ego for a moment.
