President Donald Trump has faced significant criticism for his frequently bungled handling of the federal government’s response to the Coronavirus pandemic. He’s frequently refused to even utilize the provisions of the Defense Production Act to order the production of medical supplies that are desperately needed around the country as Coronavirus case totals pile up. This weekend during a Meet the Press appearance, former Vice President and likely Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden lambasted Trump for his fumbling and insisted that, if president, he would enact an actual comprehensive and effective response to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Biden explained:

‘I would be doing two things at least. I would make sure that he uses the Defense Production Act, not only to deal with the issue of whether or not there are enough ventilators, but I would do the same thing for masks and gowns and shields and all the things our first responders and doctors and nurses need. Why are we waiting? We know they’re needed. They’re going to be increasingly needed… I would be moving rapidly. I would also be talking about the next stage of the funding that we’re gonna need.’

Watch:

As for the financial relief issue, Biden added that Trump “should be focusing on making sure we are in a situation where we are able to see to it that unemployment benefits can get to people.”

Trump has offered shifting answers when he himself has been pressed over the Defense Production Act. Initially, he failed to even make it clear whether or not he’d actually invoked the act at all. He’s since claimed that the act has been utilized “against” General Motors — although in his Oval Office remarks in which he made that revelation, he initially wrongly referred to the company as General Electric.

Earlier that same day, he’d angrily tweeted about the company, turning the implementation of the Act into a political football to lob at his opponents. He railed:

‘As usual with “this” General Motors, things just never seem to work out. They said they were going to give us 40,000 much needed Ventilators, “very quickly”. Now they are saying it will only be 6000, in late April, and they want top dollar. Always a mess with Mary B. Invoke “P”.’

And because his chaos never ends, it’s worth noting that literally the night before all of that, Trump had been on Sean Hannity’s Fox show insisting that he doesn’t even believe that the state of New York would need the tens of thousands of ventilators that they’ve been after at all. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) promptly denounced Trump’s take as “incorrect and grossly uninformed,” explaining that any ventilators they currently have would seemingly likely be put into use as the surge in virus cases across the state wears on. The state has already suffered tens of thousands of confirmed cases and almost 900 deaths as of early Sunday — and at least some other states appear to be on similar trajectories amidst Trump’s floundering and response failures.
