House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has again bluntly denounced President Donald Trump’s Coronavirus response failures as deadly, hours after a report emerged indicating that the Coronavirus was spreading and killing people in the U.S. nearly a month before the previously confirmed first Coronavirus death in the U.S. That longer spread puts an even more desperate impetus behind swift government action to clamp down on the pandemic, which Trump took 70 days to take seriously following initial notification of the virus’s emergence and spread. Pelosi characterized Trump’s virus response as “delay, denial, death.”

She told Morning Joe on MSNBC:

‘There’s a Boy Scouts saying ‘proper preparation prevents poor performance,’ well that was exactly where the president gets an ‘F’. He was not properly prepared, not with the truth, with the facts or the admission of what was happening in our country, delay, whatever, delay, denial, death. Instead, we’d like to see him insist on the truth, and we must insist on the truth with him, and that [possibility] is really what should give us hope — it’s never too late, as I keep saying, to tell the truth, Mr. President, and it’s never too late to do the right thing, and to pay attention to science, science, science.’

Watch below:

Trump has claimed, utterly absurdly, that he’s actually taken the Coronavirus seriously from the very beginning. He has not. At the end of February — what’s now been confirmed as almost a month after the first Coronavirus death in the U.S. — Trump called concern over the now globe-ravaging pandemic a “hoax.”

Throughout those weeks, Trump declined to take any major steps beyond the single, solitary move of restricting (not completely banning) travel from China. The virus made it to the U.S. anyway, but not until March did Trump even impose national social distancing guidelines meant to stem the virus’s spread.

Trump has already turned away from commitment to those social distancing measures before they even officially expire at the end of April. Recently, he tweeted calls for his followers to “liberate” certain states that are under stay-at-home orders that are in line with the science-based recommendations that his own administration has in place. Trump, as Pelosi notes, just keeps ignoring the science that calls for continued social distancing.

He’s even resorted to vague racist notions that there’s going to be some imminent influx of immigrant workers stealing American jobs or whatever.

At a press conference this week, where he announced he’d be suspending the issuance of green cards for two months, he claimed:

‘By pausing immigration, we’ll help put unemployed Americans first in line for jobs as America reopens. So important. It would be wrong & unjust for Americans laid off by the virus to be replaced with new immigrant labor flown in from abroad.’

Does this have any relationship to the science of tackling the Coronavirus pandemic? No, it does not, but Trump keeps running with it anyway in the name of making himself look good, even as the confirmed Coronavirus death toll in the U.S. climbs towards 50,000.
