The coronavirus pandemic has forced people to change in so many ways. First off, after trying to teach their own children via distance learning, Americans have expressed a much greater appreciation of teachers. In addition, COVID-19 has interrupted people’s lives and thrust them into the change lane.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama has been a welcome sight for those whose lives have been rubbed raw with the pandemic. They have been facing an economy that some economists believe will be worse than the 1929 Great Depression, which lasted for nearly a decade. Not all agree with that dire prediction even after more than 30 million have filed for unemployment, and that number has continued to rise.
Obama’s words were balm to “young people” whose lives have also been upturned by the pandemic. Their college experience has turned into a computer screen, a protective mask, and an uncertain future.
The former first lady said on College Signing Day “celebrate this milestone…I’m so proud of all of you:”
‘To all the young people out there, I want you to know that I see you. I know this #CollegeSigningDay is not what you imagined it would be, but I hope you still get a chance to celebrate this milestone in your life. I’m so proud of all of you and will be rooting for you.’
A Netflix original documentary Becoming was filmed as a behind-the-scenes look at Michelle Obama’s 34-city book tour, according to Black Enterprise. She posted this message on Instagram:
‘I’m excited to let you know that on May 6, @Netflix will release BECOMING, a documentary film directed by Nadia Hallgren that looks at my life and the experiences I had while touring following the release of my memoir. Those months I spent traveling—meeting and connecting with people in cities across the globe—drove home the idea that what we share in common is deep and real and can’t be messed with. In groups large and small, young and old, unique and united, we came together and shared stories, filling those spaces with our joys, worries, and dreams. We processed the past and imagined a better future. In talking about the idea of ‘becoming,’ many of us dared to say our hopes out loud.’
The documentary of the same name as her book, Becoming, showed how women worldwide related to President Obama’s wife during her book tour. Her autobiographical novel has sold over 10 million copies:
‘I TREASURE THE MEMORIES AND THAT SENSE OF CONNECTION NOW MORE THAN EVER, AS WE STRUGGLE TOGETHER TO WEATHER THIS PANDEMIC, AS WE CARE FOR OUR LOVED ONES, AND COPE WITH LOSS, CONFUSION, AND UNCERTAINTY.’
One woman reviewed her book, gave her five stars, and wrote on the Amazon site:
‘I believe I always loved Michelle Obama. Her grace and dignity always seemed to come as a gift from above. Her spirit is so incredibly deep and strong. The stories from her childhood, her brother, her neighborhood, her family, inform us in a brilliant voice about what it was like in the place and time she grew up.’
Mrs. Obama continued complimenting the director of this documentary:
‘It’s hard these days to feel grounded or hopeful, but I hope that like me, you’ll find joy and a bit of respite in what Nadia has made. Because she’s a rare talent, someone whose intelligence and compassion for others comes through in every frame she shoots. Most importantly, she understands the meaning of community, the power of community, and her work is magically able to depict it.’
