Donald Trump is noticeably rattled over his odds in the upcoming November 3rd elections. He ran on a good economy up until the economy tanked. Then, the coronavirus pandemic hit and knocked him back on his heels. POTUS’ traditional tactics have not been working as a new poll shows.
Current presidential opponent and former Vice President (VP) Joe Biden has taken a “double-digit lead” over the sitting president in Virginia in a new poll. The Roanoke College Poll was just released Tuesday.
Biden carried 51 percent of the voters while Trump struggled in 12 points below the VP at a weak 39 percent. Four years ago presidential candidate Secretary Hillary Clinton led Trump by a five-point margin in the state. At the time, she was not a very popular candidate even among Democrats.
It appeared that neither presidential candidate for 2020 had “high favorability numbers.” Thirty-six percent of the interviewees view Trump and Biden favorably. However, 49 percent of them viewed the sitting president unfavorably while 39 percent viewed the former VP unfavorably.
Ironically, how Trump he dealt with the coronavirus pandemic has not had much substantial effect on his favorability numbers. In a like Roanoke College poll in February, his favorability numbers were at 32 percent, and his unfavorability numbers were 54 percent.
Director of the Roanoke College Poll Harry Wilson said:
‘Events appear to be unrelated to how he is viewed in the Commonwealth. As is often true in the current political climate, the election will be decided by who turns out, and Democrats have outnumbered Republicans for the past several federal and statewide elections in Virginia.’
In the poll, the president’s overall job approval remained static, remaining at 36 percent since last February. A full 54 percent of votes in Virginia disapproved of how he has been doing his job.

‘First, in perhaps troubling news for President Trump, since last week there’s been a slight uptick in the number of Americans who disapprove of how he’s handling the crisis, according to FiveThirtyEight’s tracker of coronavirus polling.’
Virginia has traditionally been a guaranteed Republican state. However, since 2008, the Democrats have taken every presidential election. That was when the late Senator John McCain (R-AZ) ran against President Barack Obama in his first term.
In the 2018 midterm elections, Democrats took three of the seats belonging to House Republicans. This flipped the Virginia General Assembly for the Democrats, which had not happened since 1994.
That proves evidence that the split was not between Democratic and Republican parties as much as the split has been between those who support the people and those who support big business. Unfortunately, it has not been clear that Trump’s strongest Republican voters, his base, have been aware of those differences.
In its latest poll, the Roanoke College Poll interviewed 563 likely Virginia voters via phone between May 3 and 17. The margin of error was 4.1 +/- percentage points.
