Somehow, the Trumps still seem to think that there’s anyone outside of their core base who would take them seriously on topics like remembering soldiers who lost their lives while fighting for the United States. The solemn respect associated with that remembrance is the opposite of the Trumps and everything that they very clearly stand for. This Monday, the president’s daughter and adviser Ivanka Trump attempted to launch a Memorial Day Twitter message anyway. Commenters promptly reminded Ivanka that she was a member of a “family of cowards,” as one Twitter user put it.

The problem is that the Trumps have long made clear exactly what kind of “greatness” that they have in mind when they discuss the United States. The president wants to drag America even further into the past and establish himself as a racist despot. And in the meantime, Americans are suffering — it’s worth noting that there have been many veterans among the tens of thousands of Americans who have died due to the Coronavirus, which has plagued those who may have already been immunocompromised.
Trump has consistently dismissed the significance of the crisis. Over the weekend, he even went golfing — and it’s not like Ivanka has done much of anything to help pick up the leadership slack. Many still aren’t even quite sure what it is that she does do in the White House besides carry out nepotism.
