Donald Trump has been causing four-star generals grief. His former chief of staff John Kelly, and even Republican former National Security Advisor, as Commander of the U.S. Army Forces Command and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Colin Powell went public against Trump. This is an extremely rare event.
All of the living Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter denounced this sitting president. President Bush went even further. He announced he would not vote for Trump this coming November.
Although President Bush did not indicate he would vote for Biden, it appeared that he might, based upon how his family voted in 2016. He told Texas Tribune:
‘Both of the Bush brothers — and their parents, former President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush — said in 2016 they didn’t vote for Trump. But Trump endorsed Jeb’s son, George P. Bush, when he ran for reelection as Texas Land Commissioner in 2018. In 2014, before Jeb Bush ran for president (a race he lost to Trump).’
Neither will U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) or widow of Senator John McCain (R-AZ) endorse Trump. The military leaders such as a former University of Texas System chancellor and a retired Navy Admiral William McRaven indicated that Trump was unqualified to assume the office:
‘This fall, it’s time for new leadership in this country — Republican, Democrat or independent. President Trump has shown he doesn’t have the qualities necessary to be a good commander in chief.’
The former Texas governor said that both he and his brother former Florida Governor Jeb Bush were not certain “how he’ll vote.” A spokesperson for Bush Freddy Ford told The Texas Tribune that his boss would not announce how he would vote in the presidential election and said The New York Times article was wrong:
‘This is completely made up. He is retired from presidential politics and has not indicated how he will vote.’
As always, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) was his usual smarmy self. He offered “unwavering supports” to Donald Trump.
