Although the Obamas have been out of the White House for years, they’ve been continuing to make their voices heard. Former First Lady Michelle Obama in particular has worked to increase voter participation across the United States through means like her advocacy organization When We All Vote, which has led voter registration drives and similar programs around the country. This Tuesday, as the general election gets closer, the former First Lady called on voters to make their own voices heard in primary elections that were scheduled for Tuesday in a number of states.
She shared:
‘This past month has shown that you all know how to make your voices heard. Now it’s time to speak out at the ballot box. You can vote today in Georgia, North Dakota, South Carolina, West Virginia & Nevada. Don’t miss this chance to have a say in the future of your communities.’

Calling on Americans to vote has been a common theme of many of the former First Lady’s recent public messages. As some have pointed out, many of the policies that have occupied so much of the country amidst recent nationwide protests against police brutality are largely decided on a local level. Thus, voting is important — outcomes of easily accessible local elections can help shape the futures that many across America are interested in protecting.
Recently, for example, Obama commented:
‘This is how you can finish the work that the generations before you started. By staying open and hopeful, even through tough times. Even through discomfort and pain. Channel your feelings into activism and into this democracy that was designed to respond to those who vote.’
