President Donald Trump continues to congratulate himself for a supposed job well done in responding to the Coronavirus, although over 120,000 Americans have died and in some areas around the country — like Arizona, Texas, and Florida — cases have been spiking significantly recently. This Tuesday morning, Trump dubiously claimed that the steps that he did take in response to the virus “saved millions of lives,” and he complained that the “fake news” isn’t giving him enough of the credit that he thinks he deserves. The idea is ridiculous that Trump personally had anything to do with any lives that were saved amidst the Coronavirus pandemic. Does he think that whiny tweets save lives or something?
This Tuesday morning, Trump complained:
‘We did a great job on CoronaVirus, including the very early ban on China, Ventilator production, and Testing, which is by far the most, and best, in the World. We saved millions of U.S. lives.! Yet the Fake News refuses to acknowledge this in a positive way. But they do give Dr. Anthony Fauci, who is with us in all ways, a very high 72% Approval Rating. So, if he is in charge along with V.P. etc., and with us doing all of these really good things, why doesn’t the Lamestream Media treat us as they should? Answer: Because they are Fake News!’

It’s astounding that Trump is so pathologically self-obsessed that he’s made up this scenario in which he helped save “millions of lives” and the dastardly fake news refuses to acknowledge his supposedly valiant accomplishments. That scenario, which Trump puts forward in this Twitter rant, is essentially entirely disconnected from reality.
For example, Trump has widely touted his restrictions on travel from China, where the virus first emerged — but by the time of those restrictions, some airlines had already scaled back flights of their own accord, and more acutely: the virus was already in the United States. A travel ban obviously did nothing to stop the spread of the already present virus within the United States itself.
