President Donald Trump has come out against Jeff Sessions in the ongoing Alabama Senate race in which Sessions is trying to get back a seat representing the state in Congress. Sessions served as an Alabama Senator for decades before taking a job as Attorney General in the Trump administration, but Trump partly blames Sessions for Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, since Sessions recused himself from the matter on account of his own involvement in the activity under investigation, and following his recusal, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller. This weekend, Sessions publicly lashed out against Trump and called him out for his pettiness.
Sessions is running against Tommy Tuberville in the Republican primary, and whoever wins the primary will face incumbent Democrat Doug Jones. Sessions tweeted, addressing Trump directly:
‘I’ve taken the road less travelled. Not sought fame or fortune. My honor and integrity are far more important than these juvenile insults. Your scandal ridden candidate is too cowardly to debate. As you know, Alabama does not take orders from Washington.’

Trump is upset that Sessions didn’t subvert the rule of law and essentially take over the Russia investigation in order to direct it how the president would have liked. Trump has consistently tried to depict the Russia investigation, both inside and outside of Mueller’s purview, as some kind of nefarious plot against him, but it’s nothing of the sort. He simply refuses to acknowledge the basic reality of the evidence that points to his team’s intertwining with corruption. Instead, he tries to convince observers that just about any potentially bad news is “fake” and a plot to make him look bad.
Back in May, Trump had belligerently tweeted:
‘3 years ago, after Jeff Sessions recused himself, the Fraudulent Mueller Scam began. Alabama, do not trust Jeff Sessions. He let our Country down. That’s why I endorsed Coach Tommy Tuberville (@TTuberville), the true supporter of our #MAGA agenda!’
To be clear: Trump’s definition of supporting “our country” means orchestrating a national security-related investigation in line with the president’s own wishes. That’s what he wishes Sessions would have done. That’s not “patriotism.” It’s a personality cult, in which Trump consistently attempts to fervently indoctrinate his supporters.
