Some of America’s leaders have had beautiful and poignant things to say on this day, the day that the world lost Civil Rights icon John Lewis. Barack Obama talked about his legacy, Bill Clinton talked about his inspirational courage, and Joe Biden talked about his courage.
Donald Trump went golfing with Lindsey Graham in matching outfits and then he (or someone on his behalf, more than likely) issued a two-sentence tweet.
Any pretense that Trump actually gave a damn about John Lewis or what he stood for throughout his life has been destroyed over the past four years. Congressman Lewis risked his life to ensure voting rights, Trump won’t even risk expanding mail-in ballots during a pandemic. Lewis supported the Black Lives Matter movement in their protests against police brutality, Trump has called them a terrorist organization and warned suburbanites that the people in the movement will “infest” their neighborhoods if given equal rights to housing access. John Lewis was a selfless, wonderful man. Donald Trump is a selfish, self-centered, and narcissistic. The two men could not possibly be more different and Trump cannot even fathom how amazing his life was.
His nonchalant attitude about the death of a great Civil Rights leader, a man who stood as equals with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the 1960s, is almost more insulting than him having said nothing at all.
Twitter didn’t seem all that pleased with Trump’s passing tribute. Read some of their comments below:
