Regardless what one thinks of the policies or accomplishments of President Barack Obama, it is undeniable that he was a calm voice of strength during some of the worst moments of our country from 2008-2016. His ability to empathize and reflect the emotions of the American people at any crucial moment made him an important touchstone in times of crisis.

As the world mourns the passing of Civil Rights icon and Congressman John Lewis (D-GA), the man who nearly gave his life for the rights of black Americans to vote and have a voice in the government, CNN correspondant Shimon Prokupecz noted on Twitter that Donald Trump is busy golfing with his friend, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC). So far, he’s been too busy to even tweet a kind word or a statement of solidarity with those in mourning.

Most of his predecessors who are still living – Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton – have issued words of sympathy and support. Trump’s challenger in the 2020 presidential elections, former Vice President Joe Biden, has issued a statement on the death of the inimitable Congressman Lewis. Trump cannot be bothered to do so.

During the worst civil unrest since John Lewis’s younger days, the days in which he risked everything to help bring the country closer to its ideals of equality and brotherhood, Trump has golfed. During the worst pandemic in this country since 1917, Trump has golfed. During the worst unemployment rate since the Great Depression of 1929, Trump has golfed.
Nothing, however, is more shameful than golfing on this day. Trump’s decision to do so makes the difference between him and Rep. John Lewis all the more stark.
Hillary and I were blessed by his friendship, support and wise counsel. We’ll miss him so much, but we’ll always be grateful that he lived to see a new generation of Americans take to the streets in search of his long sought “beloved community.” https://t.co/gKDuLmUMLQ
