Trump Suffers Public Mental Collapse During Sunday Fox Interview

President Donald Trump never has and — by all appearances — never will take the Coronavirus as seriously as the situation demands. Sure, he makes grandiose proclamations about how the nation will supposedly win its existential battle against the “invisible enemy” or whatever — but then he doesn’t actually do much of anything. Hundreds of Americans are dying each and every day due to the Coronavirus, and in some areas of the country, numbers are rising, but during an interview that aired on Fox News Sunday this weekend, Trump downplayed the death toll. According to one count, over 142,000 Americans have died, and just this Saturday, over 800 new deaths were reported. Trump seemed barely fazed.

Asked about the rising case numbers by Fox host Chris Wallace, Trump said:

‘It’s all too much. It shouldn’t be one case. It came from China. They should have never let it escape. They should have never let it out, but it is what it is. Take a look at Europe; take a look at the numbers in Europe — and by the way, they’re having cases.’

After Wallace pointed out that the entire European Union has been seeing daily new case counts that are far below those of the United States, Trump claimed that the difference was because “they don’t test” — which is brazenly false. The European Union has conducted plenty of testing. The key difference between their situation and that of the U.S. is that the EU has contained the virus much more effectively — but, referring to testing, Trump claimed:

‘Many of those cases heal automatically. In a way, we’re creating trouble — certainly we’re creating trouble for the fake news to come along and say oh we have more cases. Look, we did something that nobody’s ever done — not only the ventilators where we’re supplying them all over the world, we did a testing program, the likes of which nobody’s ever done before.’

That is a lie. The United Kingdom has still, even after all this time, conducted far more tests per capita than the United States. The U.S. isn’t some shining city on a hill like in Trump’s unhinged imagination.

During his Fox interview, Trump also went on some other very unhinged tangents — which didn’t exactly go so well. For instance, he yet again brought up his belligerent demand for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden to take a cognitive test, and host Chris Wallace promptly pointed out that he himself took the one that Trump’s been bragging about passing — and it was extremely easy. For instance, Wallace noted, there’s a part on the test where respondents are asked to identify an image of an elephant as an elephant. There’s another part, Wallace noted, where respondents are asked to count backwards from 100 by 7. It’s not exactly cutting-edge stuff here.

What’s next? Is Trump going to suddenly start bragging about waking up in the morning? During the interview, he also dismissed polls that show him losing to Biden by big margins as “fake.” They’re not fake. Trump just has major, lasting problems with acknowledging basic reality and the consequences of his actions.
