W.H. Chief Of Staff Embarrasses Himself During ‘ABC Sunday’

The Trump administration continues to try and push major policy issues under the rug. During an appearance on ABC’s This Week on Sunday morning, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows insisted that the Trump team took “unprecedented steps” in their response to the Coronavirus pandemic, but, in reality, by any reasonable measurement, the White House’s Coronavirus response has failed. According to one major tally, the U.S. death toll stands at almost 150,000 as of Sunday morning, while other major countries have successfully gotten their outbreaks under control. Also on Sunday morning, Meadows tried to support the president’s hyped-up, reality-disconnected claims about how the 2020 election might be “rigged.”

Apparently asked if he would acknowledge that steps like shutting down the economy earlier and promoting wearing masks earlier could have helped the U.S. more effectively combat the virus, Meadows replied:

‘Well we did shut down the economy… We actually took unprecedented steps. Not only did the president shut down travel from China and Europe long before even the medical experts were suggesting he should do so, we shut down the economy to try and mitigate the damage… obviously we all want to do whatever we can do to stop this, and wearing masks when there’s not the ability to social distance is one additional thing that we can do. But even in those areas, if you take southern Florida, Miami-Dade, Broward County — they’ve had mandatory mask provisions for several weeks and yet they continue to see this virus escalate.’

Meadows seems to be being intentionally dense. He’s trying to use meaningless fluff to mask the abject failures of the Trump administration’s Coronavirus response. To answer his point about southern Florida: masks are not some kind of perfect, magical, 100% effective solution, and additionally, government mask mandates mean little if there are people among the population who feel empowered by people like Trump to violate the mandate and not wear a mask.

Meadows added:

‘We’re not going to have a solution to this. It’s not masks, it’s not shutting down the economy, hopefully it is American ingenuity that will allow for therapies and vaccines to ultimately conquer this, and that’s where the president has made sure that there’s no amount of money that’s held back for meeting those needs.’

Americans are dying by the hundreds every single day, and Meadows seems mostly concerned with propping up Trump’s ego. Watch his comments below:

Meadows also addressed mail-in voting. He brazenly lied, claiming that the U.S. has not yet used mail-in ballots on a “widespread” level. That is false — just this past April, the Brennan Center reported that “In the last two federal elections, roughly one out of every four Americans cast a mail ballot,” no matter what Meadows wants to haughtily claim otherwise.

There are already many security measures that are in place to protect the integrity of these ballots, and although Republicans like to tout extremely isolated instances of fraud as if they’re indicative of some kind of systemic issue — in reality, the revelation of the extremely isolated incidents means that the system is working, since irregularities were found out and dealt with.
