Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has sizable leads in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, according to polling data that emerged this weekend from CBS/YouGov. The polls found 6 percent leads for Biden in both states. In Pennsylvania, Biden had 49 percent of the support — an almost insurmountable level — compared to just 43 percent of respondents who went for Trump. In Wisconsin, Biden garnered 48 percent of the support, while Trump got 42 percent. Currently, including the CBS/YouGov data, Biden leads in Pennsylvania polls by an average of 5 percent, and he leads in Wisconsin polls by an average of 6.4 percent, according to RealClearPolitics.

The Coronavirus pandemic doesn’t exactly seem poised to somehow magically fade from view by the time of Election Day in November, and in the new CBS polling, 75 percent of Pennsylvania respondents and 76 percent of Wisconsin respondents said that they think the U.S. is on a bad track through the pandemic and the connected economic crisis. Trump, with his incessant refusals to take the crises seriously, certainly is not helping the situation. In both Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, 47 percent of CBS poll respondents said that they believed that Biden could handle the Coronavirus crisis better. A meager 37 percent of Pennsylvania respondents and just 32 percent of Wisconsin respondents said they believed Trump could better handle the crisis.

It’s not exactly great for a president to have the confidence of barely one-third of respondents when it comes to handling an ongoing major national crisis. In the new CBS polling, Trump did lead when it came to the question of who could better handle the economy — but his leads were quite slim. In Pennsylvania, 46 percent of respondents said they thought Trump could better handle the economy, while 45 percent named Biden. In Wisconsin, 47 percent named Trump, and 43 percent opted for Biden.

Currently, Trump is losing by substantial margins in many important polls. On the national level, he’s losing by an average of 6.4 percent as of Sunday afternoon, according to RealClearPolitics. Electoral college projections give Biden a clear advantage — the Cook Political Report, for instance, projects that 308 electoral votes are at least leaning Democratic.
