On Monday night, the Democratic National Convention’s keynote speaker was former First Lady and best-selling author Michelle Obama. Her speech brought tears, applause, and inspiration.

Obama spoke on the example America is currently setting for its children amidst the deep divide and individualism apparent in American society. Speaking on the COVID-19 crisis and the country’s response to it, the racist ideology that devalues the lives of black and brown people, and the escalating violence in the streets by Trump’s federal agents and police, Obama called on the country to do better.

‘They see people shouting in grocery stores, unwilling to wear a mask to keep us all safe. They see an entitlement that says only certain people belong here, that greed is good, and winning is everything because as long as you come out on top, it doesn’t matter what happens to everyone else.

‘They see our leaders labeling fellow citizens enemies of the state while emboldening torch-bearing white supremacists. They watch in horror as children are torn from their families and thrown into cages, and pepper spray and rubber bullets are used on peaceful protestors for a photo-op.

‘Sadly, this is the America that is on display for the next generation. That’s not just disappointing; it’s downright infuriating.’

She also revisited her famous line, “when they go low, we go high,” saying that it is still the only thing that works. However, she explained, it doesn’t mean rolling over and accepting injustice or hatred, but standing up against it with truth and empathy.

‘Going high does not mean putting on a smile and saying nice things when confronted by viciousness and cruelty. Going high means taking the harder path. It means scraping and clawing our way to that mountain top.

‘Going high means standing fierce against hatred … And going high means unlocking the shackles of lies and mistrust with the only thing that can truly set us free: the cold hard truth.’

Pulling absolutely no punches, Obama warned America that this election is one of the most important in the history of our country and that failing to remove President Trump from the White House will cause more loss than the country has already experienced.

‘If you think things cannot possibly get worse, trust me, they can; and they will if we don’t make a change in this election.’
