The last thing a president who’s lagging in the polls should want to do is make voters in a key swing state angry just ahead of the elections by threatening their livelihoods. That’s exactly, however, what Trump did on Twitter on Wednesday.
His tantrum came after a training at one Goodyear store telling employees not to wear politically motivated clothing and hats during work, including Biden 2020 t-shirts and MAGA hats alike. Right-wingers were rugged the wrong way because Black Lives Matter shirts were still allowed because the issue is not and never should have been political. Trump, however, was just angry over the hats.
The Lincoln Project reminded Ohioans how important Goodyear is to their economy, providing over 3,000 union jobs. Attacking them at any time is a bad idea for a president, but doing so with Ohio still very much in play for the presidential elections is a form of political sabotage. Ohio workers are unlikely to forget Trump’s tantrum, which affected their local economy, before November.
To date, no Democrat has won the presidential election in recent history without Ohio on its side, so Joe Biden getting a win there would bode well for his chances in the rest of the country. Losing Ohio would be a blow to Trump, and it’s unlikely that his rabid supporters would be driven to the polls over a hat in the same way that voters will be driven to the polls over the prospect of losing their good, union jobs.
