President Donald Trump is still facing the fallout from a recent report in The Atlantic that revealed that he’d apparently referred to American service members who were killed in action as “losers” and “suckers.” Other details in that same report include the allegation that Trump was enraged when flags were lowered to half-staff at federal buildings after the death of John McCain — a detail which was publicly confirmed, on the record, by Miles Taylor, who served for awhile in the Trump administration’s Department of Homeland Security. Trump and his allies have pushed back against the core allegations, but as a new ad from the anti-Trump group known as The Lincoln Project makes clear, Trump has an established history of a tumultuous relationship with military families.

The Lincoln Project insists that Trump “doesn’t protect them,” “doesn’t respect them,” and is a “disgrace.” As their new video recounts, Trump has even refused to take seriously a report that Russia had placed bounties on U.S. troops, offering rewards if Afghan fighters killed them. Shouldn’t a president want to at least seriously vet any allegation along those lines? Trump hasn’t — he’s self-confidently declared the whole thing to be a hoax, seemingly obsessing over the potential impact on his public image, like always.

The video also recounts incidents like a 2017 occasion when Trump totally fumbled a condolence call to the family of Sgt. La David Johnson, an American soldier who was killed in Niger. According to Democratic Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, who was on the family’s side of the call when it happened, Trump told Johnson’s widow that her late husband “knew what he signed up for, but when it happens, it hurts anyway.” According to the Congresswoman, the widow, Myeshia, was “crying the whole time” and said the president “didn’t even remember” her late husband’s name. Cowanda Jones-Johnson, the late soldier’s mother, eventually confirmed that Trump “did disrespect my son and my daughter and also me and my husband.”

In short — Trump seems to be a pathologically self-obsessed narcissist who sees just about everything through a lens of how it can or can’t benefit himself.
