On Friday, the anti-Trump conservative group known as The Lincoln Project released a new video ad that it said was meant to “remind Americans of the character of Trump.” The clip recounts events ranging from Trump’s post-9/11 brag that he now had the tallest building in Manhattan to his more recent culpability in the spread of the Coronavirus in the United States, which, every few days, has claimed as many Americans’ lives as were lost on 9/11 for awhile now. Trump has consistently refused to take the virus seriously; in a newly released tape of a conversation between Trump and journalist Bob Woodward in March, Trump admitted to intentionally downplaying the virus.
In their caption for their new video, The Lincoln Project states:
‘There has been a tradition where political ads are pulled down on 9/11. But never before have we had a president who attacked the men and women who rose to defend our country, calling them suckers and losers. This ad is necessary to remind Americans of the character of Trump.’
Indeed — a recent report in The Atlantic alleged that Trump had called American service members killed in action “suckers” and “losers.” Trump denied the allegations, but his alleged comments aren’t even that far off from what he’s previously said publicly.
In the new Lincoln Project video, a narrator says:
‘9/11/2001: policemen, firemen, on-duty, off-duty didn’t wait for orders, they ran into the fire to save lives. After 9/11, America went to war. Thousands volunteered, and many died. Today, Donald Trump calls them “suckers” and “losers.” On that day, Donald Trump was just a terrible person. He bragged about the fact that he now had the tallest building in New York… Later, he lied and said he was at Ground Zero, helping… Today, Donald Trump is more than just a terrible person. He’s the worst president in American history. He’s divided the country and lied to all of us, about everything.’

There’s more to the president’s terrible behavior surrounding this subject. He has claimed that he saw “thousands and thousands” of presumed U.S. Muslims celebrating the attack in its aftermath, for instance, but that never happened.
