President Donald Trump, without question, has failed in responding to the Coronavirus pandemic. Over 200,000 Americans have died — in no universe does that total represent an “incredible job” on the part of the federal government, as Trump has claimed. At a recent rally, Trump self-confidently insisted that the Coronavirus affects “virtually nobody” among younger age groups, but that’s not true — more than 513,000 children have been infected with the virus in the U.S. since the onset of the pandemic, according to a study from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association. Trump’s self-confident boasting also glosses over the fact that the virus has, in fact, devastated older age groups. The Lincoln Project zeroes in on this fact in a new ad.

In the caption for their ad, which includes stats about the devastating toll of the pandemic on seniors, the anti-Trump conservative group writes:

‘If you’re over the age of 65, Donald Trump doesn’t care whether you live or die.’

That’s obviously an extreme claim — and has Trump really done all that much to prove it wrong? At basically every turn, he has downplayed the threat of the virus and chickened out of leading any kind of effective, national-level response. Check out the new video below:

In a taped conversation with journalist Bob Woodward earlier this year, Trump admitted to intentionally downplaying the virus. He has defended his behavior by claiming that he did not want to spark some kind of panic — but is a virus that could kill hundreds of thousands of Americans not worth worrying quite seriously over? Trump seems content to kick back and bask in the glow of his de facto cult members’ support at the rallies that he has recently been holding in brazen defiance of basic social distancing guidelines that are supposed to help keep people alive.

According to polls, there has been a huge shift towards Biden and the Democrats among senior voters. Nationally, Trump won among voters who are 65 and older by a margin of a little over 13 percent in 2016, as FiveThirtyEight explains. In nine recent polls, Biden led Trump among senior voters by an average of almost 4 percent. In other words, there’s been an about 17 percent shift towards Democrats among senior voters, according to these recent polls.
