Portland Sheriff Fact-Checks Trump’s Lies About His Endorsement

On the debate stage Tuesday night, President Donald Trump proved that he is a pathologically petulant imbecile who has no business being anywhere near the presidency. He interrupted Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and antagonized moderator Chris Wallace ad nauseum, as if the proceedings were some kind of reality television game to him. He also proved that he’s a liar — Trump claimed at one point that he had secured the endorsement of the “Portland sheriff,” but Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese — whose jurisdiction includes Portland, Oregon — promptly tweeted that he does not support Trump and never will.

Trump tried to use this apparent imaginary endorsement from the “Portland sheriff” to bolster his case that he’s the “law and order” candidate. Trump, of course, seems disconnected from reality — he’s the one whose seen a slew of associates get hit with federal criminal charges, and he’s the one who — during that same debate! — told the violent white nationalist group known as the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by.”

Reese tweeted:

‘In tonight’s presidential debate the President said the “Portland Sheriff” supports him. As the Multnomah County Sheriff I have never supported Donald Trump and will never support him. Donald Trump has made my job a hell of a lot harder since he started talking about Portland, but I never thought he’d try to turn my wife against me!’

Trump has pathologically obsessed over Portland, which has seen lengthy protests against police brutality throughout the summer, some of which have turned violent. At one point, the Trump administration sent an unsolicited federal law enforcement presence into the city, and these agents violently harassed peaceful demonstrators, which did not improve the situation, but the federal agents were pressured out of the city. Trump has been fearmongering about the Portland demonstrations, claiming that violence is coming to the suburbs if Joe Biden wins the presidency — which is just baseless nonsense. Trump reiterated his claim during the Tuesday debate that Democrats want to abolish the suburbs, insisting that “our suburbs would be gone” under a Biden presidency, which is a lie.

Trump’s lie-riddled and hollow “look at me I’m a tough guy” shtick does not appear to have worked. In an “instant poll” of debate watchers conducted by CNN, 60 percent said that Biden “won.” Just 28 percent said the same of Trump.
