President Donald Trump will be leaving Walter Reed Medical Center on Monday evening, according to a Twitter post that he put up on mid-Monday afternoon. He was transported to the facility following positive Coronavirus test results, and while there, it’s been a struggle to get basic information about his condition from White House physician Dr. Sean Conley and others. It took Conley until about a day after initial questioning to even admit that Trump had ever used supplemental oxygen.

As if the virus crisis is some kind of public relations game to him, Trump tweeted on Monday afternoon that Americans shouldn’t be “afraid of Covid.” Over 200,000 Americans are dead. They didn’t lose their lives because they were afraid — they lost their lives because they caught a virus that the Trump administration has failed to systematically contain. Instead of systematically engaging with the basic material needs of the American people at every step of the crisis, the president has frequently resorted to talking about the virus crisis as if it’s merely a matter of public perception. It’s not, and it never has been.

He tweeted:

‘I will be leaving the great Walter Reed Medical Center today at 6:30 P.M. Feeling really good! Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs & knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years ago!’

The idea that those who are concerned about the Coronavirus are somehow cowardly or letting it “dominate” their lives is ridiculous. Trump just seems to willfully fail to grasp the basic facts of the situation. Taking the virus seriously — just about the opposite of Trump’s stance — is exactly what Americans should be encouraged to do as it continues to spread.

On Monday, he also tweeted a rant against the media. He complained about criticism of a short trip outside of Walter Reed Medical Center that he took on Sunday, when he waved to supporters from behind a closed car window.

He posted on Twitter:

‘It is reported that the Media is upset because I got into a secure vehicle to say thank you to the many fans and supporters who were standing outside of the hospital for many hours, and even days, to pay their respect to their President. If I didn’t do it, Media would say RUDE!!!’

Obviously, there is no evidence that the media would have called him rude if he stayed inside the hospital on Sunday. At issue is the fact that he needlessly exposed Secret Service agents (and possibly other staffers) to the Coronavirus.
