The Senate Judicial Committee is meeting in spite of two of the Republicans testing positive for the coronavirus. The committee Democrats all tested themselves before coming, but none of the Republicans would do so. Yet, the Senate Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) canceled the Senate out of concern over the pandemic. The GOP has been trying to stuff a third justice onto the Supreme Court as they waited unseemingly eagerly for the intrepid Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to die.
What an insult this has been to the powerful brilliant justice committed to women’s equality. Ginsburg spent her entire career fighting for women’s rights. Hours after RBG’s untimely death, McConnell announced her replacement. She had not even been buried before the ultra-ultra-conservative Judge Amy Coney Barrett was scheduled to meet with the senators on the Judiciary Committee.
Days after RBG was buried, the committee was in session, trying to put in place a justice who would throw the presidential election to Donald Trump as the court tilts to the conservatives six to three. This judge belongs to a strange sect of the Catholic Church where the woman must submit to her husband at all times and even for sex.
Her writings indicate she would overthrow Roe v. Wade taking women and men back to the time of back-alley abortions. The Republicans cannot stop women from having abortions only force them to do so illegally. Women will die — again.
If Republicans cared about the life of a child, they would not let one in seven American children go hungry. No, this is about control over women.
The judge’s off-shoot religion condemns abortion of any kind, including to save the life of the mother. Women would have to give up their contraceptives, and the world would turn back 60 years.
Demonstrators wearing Handmaid’s Tale robes met outside of the Supreme Court to oppose this judge’s nomination, according to The Variety. The book The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood and more recently the popular television series is about an extremist religious sect that has overthrown this country’s government and forced women of all ages to continue with few if any rights.
Americans also worry that according to her writings, this judge would overturn Obamacare (Affordable Care Act/ACA) just 10 days into taking her office. She may say she will follow stare decisis (established law), but she would not be the first to break that promise. What a terrible plan in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over seven and one-half million and counting Americans tested positive for the coronavirus, which will become a pre-existing condition.
Trump promises to make certain that insurance companies would cover pre-existing conditions, but he cannot legally do that.
The GOP refused to let President Barack Obama have his final justice, because they said it was an election year. Now, the country is already voting, six million thus far, but McConnell basically said “So what?”
A photographer captured the red-robed protestors as they chanted “Let the people decide:”
