During a phone call with constituents this week, Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) had harsh criticism for President Donald Trump, who he characterized as “a TV-obsessed narcissistic individual.” Sasse criticized the Republican Party’s attachment to Trump, suggesting that Trump’s leadership of the GOP could spell temporary political doom for the party via alienating groups like young people and women. Trump, apparently, has noticed Sasse’s criticism — in a Twitter thread on Saturday, the president lashed out against the Senator. Trump’s remarks sort of prove Sasse’s point that Trump is narcissistic and volatile.

Trump tweeted:

‘The least effective of our 53 Republican Senators, and a person who truly doesn’t have what it takes to be great, is Little Ben Sasse of Nebraska, a State which I have gladly done so much to help. @SenSasse was as nice as a RINO can be until he recently won the Republican Nomination to run for a second term. Then he went back to his rather stupid and obnoxious ways. Must feel he can’t lose to a Dem. Little Ben is a liability to the Republican Party, and an embarrassment to the Great State of Nebraska. Other than that, he’s just a wonderful guy!’

Trump seems like such an obnoxiously petty individual — it’s staggering. While Americans struggle through crises that he himself has helped exacerbate, Trump sits on the White House grounds and sends whiny tweets about a long list of critics, who he refers to with mind-bogglingly inane nicknames like “Little Ben.” Trump and his allies pretend to be some kind of vanguard of American toughness or whatever, but in reality, they seem like a bunch of whiny pathological narcissists.

Trump’s narcissism really knows few, if any bounds. On Saturday, he also promoted an article on Twitter about his claim that “nobody has done more for the black community” than he has — which is an utterly ridiculous claim on its face. The willfully deranged Trump tries to characterize himself as some kind of messiah — but reality is much different. Besides the fact that many flashpoints of progress for black Americans have absolutely nothing to do with him, Trump has actively gone after black Americans through means like his lie-riddled claims that low-income housing — which is often associated with marginalized communities — will “invade” the suburbs if Biden is elected.
