Latest Maine Poll Results Have Susan Collins Packing Her Bags

Uh, oh. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) is in big trouble. She kept trying to trick her constituents, but they are smarter than Collins and insulted by her believing they are stupid. The Maine senator tries to pull a “Lucy” on them, from the Charlie Brown comic strip. She holds out the promise she will back Maine, then whisks her vote away and hands it to Donald instead.

Six days out, Collin is losing to Sara Gideon by three points, according to  The Colby College Poll margin Her opponent is:

‘Gideon, the speaker of the Maine House, is leading Collins, 47% to 43%, among likely voters, according to the Colby College poll in Waterville, Maine, and first reported by USA TODAY. A combined 7% of voters are supporting Independent candidates Lisa Savage (5%) and Max Linn (2%).’

Colby College Government Department Chair and Lead Researcher Dan Shea noted the poll has not moved much over the months. There may simply be no independents who could make difference, according to The USA Today newspaper. Shea said:

‘For all that money, and all this attention, and all those efforts, the electorate seems pretty well stuck where they started several months ago. If she doesn’t get a lot of split ticket (sic) voters, voters that will vote for Joe Biden, and then her, she’s going to return to private life.’

‘I think it’s entirely likely that the voters for Lisa Savage, this small group of progressive voters, may decide the next senator from Maine. Whereas the Senate race seemed a bit stuck, there seems to be some fluidity in the presidential contest in the second district.’

USA Today continued:

‘Democrats are hoping to flip Collins’ seat in an effort to win back the Senate in 2020; Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority. Largely due to President Donald Trump’s unpopularity in the state, Collins is considered one of the most vulnerable Republican incumbent senators this election.’

We could hear Collins rip the fabric of her state when she voted for Supreme Court (SCOTUS) Justice Brett Kavanaugh. One very credible witness against him accused him of sexually attacking her when they were in high school. She went on to become a sexual trauma expert. Kavanaugh yelled at the Democrats at the hearing like a rabid dog:

‘Despite Collins’ criticisms of Trump, Democrats have targeted the senator after her vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court in 2017 and voting to acquit Trump in his impeachment trial earlier this year. But Collins also was the only Republican to vote no to confirm Justice Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court this week and has pointed to her history as a middle-of-the-road politician.’

Shea said split-ticket voters are “the key” if the senator wants another win. Maine uses “ranked-choice voting’ where people give their first, second, and third choice. To win, the individual must have over 50 percent of the votes. If none of the candidates reach that percentage, the race moves to “ranked choice (sic) tabulations.” And what is that?

‘Using a ranked-choice process, the poll found that Savage voters selected Gideon as their second choice roughly 51% of the time, Linn 29% of the time and Collins 13% of the time.’

Shea said:

‘Biden has been making inroads across the state, but he is unsure if it’s a result of his debate performances or because the coronavirus pandemic is continuing across the country.’

  • The poll was conducted from October 21 to 25. The organization interviewed 879 likely voters. About one-third of the participants were surveyed by landlines or cell phones and the remainder in person. The margin of error is 3.3 +/- percentage points.
