President Donald Trump and his political allies have spent the time after Election Day peddling baseless conspiracy theories insisting that Democrats are trying to steal the election from Trump by messing with vote tallies, which is an utterly reality-disconnected claim. Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, who may be on his way to a victory in light of the trends in steadily developing vote tallies around the country, has taken the exact opposite perspective. At a Thursday public appearance, Biden insisted that every valid vote must be counted — which should not be a controversial position.

Biden said the following:

‘In America, the vote is sacred. It’s how people of this nation express their will, and it is the will of the voters — no one, not anything else — that chooses the president of the United States of America. So, each ballot must be counted, and that’s what we’re going to see going through now, and that’s how it should be. Democracy is sometimes messy. It sometimes requires a little patience as well, but that patience has been rewarded now for more than 240 years with a system of governance that has been the envy of the world… We continue to feel very good about where things stand.’

Again — the position that “the vote is sacred” should not be controversial. Yet, Trump has pushed ludicrous conspiracy theories and demanded abrupt ends to the tabulation of ballots. Watch Biden below:

In contrast to Biden, Trump went so far that he posted an all-caps Twitter message on Thursday in which he demanded to “STOP THE COUNT!” His campaign filed a lawsuit in Michigan seeking to stop ballot-counting until the Republicans got the ballot-counting observation access that they wanted. That request has been denied — although that denial didn’t exactly seem poised to put a dent in the Trump campaign’s fervent efforts to challenge the election results in court and outside of it. The campaign has already said that they are demanding a recount in Wisconsin, for instance.

It’s difficult to overstate the wrongness of the president’s claims about some kind of plot against him. There is no Democratic conspiracy to steal the election. Those who are trumpeting the claims from the Trump campaign like some kind of gospel are pushing conspiratorial and anti-democratic nonsense.
